Mother’s Day DIY Gifts

Posted by Bridgman on

Two DIY Gifts You Can Make for Mother’s Day Without a doubt, handmade Mother’s day gifts are the best gifts. We've come up with two great ideas for original DIY vases you can make at home.   Paint Swirl Vase A glass vase and two colours of acrylic craft paint are all the supplies you need to make a unique handmade Mother’s Day gift. You can buy a shapely glass vase at a craft store or a second hand store for this DIY gift. Any size will work; I like to make a variety of vases of different shapes with the same colour scheme. Look for colours that go with Mum’s décor. Contrasting colours tend to be exciting, whilst different shades of the same colour are more calming. Here’s what to do:
  1. Drop a few drops of one colour of paint into your vase.
  2. Add a few drops of the second colour.
  3. Begin swirling the paints inside the vase, adding a few more drops as you go. Swirl slowly so the paint will stick to the inside of the vase.
  4. Twist and turn the vase gently to get the colour up to the top.
  5. To finish off the vase, stand it upside down on paper towels and let the excess paint drain out. Then let it rest on its side for 48 hours to make sure the paint is completely dry.
You can’t put fresh flowers in it because the water will ruin the paint, but this homemade gift is perfect for dried flowers. It’s also lovely enough to stand all by itself on a shelf or mantelpiece. Light Bulb Vase If your mother taught you never to waste anything, this DIY mother’s day gift is perfect for her. Instead of throwing out an old light bulb, you are going to turn it into an elegant vase. You’ll need some supplies for this DIY gift:
  • Thin wire
  • Small hand drill
  • Hacksaw
  • Wire cutters
  • Sandpaper (coarse grit)
  • Wooden block
  • Soft cloth
  • Miscellaneous hand tools
  • Safety glasses
Here’s what to do:
  1. Holding the bulb with a soft cloth saw the screw cap off at the edge of the metal.
  2. Insert a thin screwdriver into the bulb and break off the glass stem and support wires. Some pieces will fall into the bulb and others will stay at the inside edge. Gently tap a thicker driver with a hammer to remove this excess glass. Tip out all the glass pieces from the bulb.
  3. Sand the inside edge of the bulb until it is smooth.
  4. Rinse the light bulb with warm, soapy water and let it dry.
  5. Drill two holes, one on each side of the screw cap, near the edge.
  6. Thread a piece of wire through the holes and bend them with pliers.
Your light bulb vase is ready to hang with fresh flowers or a tiny plant. Let us know how these DIY gifts work for you. Pin the pictures and share the article on Facebook and Google +.
