16 DIY Garden Ideas for an Amazing Summer

Posted by Bridgman on

My family spends a lot of time outdoors in the summer. I’m always eager for new garden ideas that will make our summer even more fun. Here are my favourite DIY garden ideas for this year.

Garden Movie Night

When the sun goes down, get comfy in your favourite garden lounger, bring out the popcorn, and watch the show.

Wireless Speakers

Wireless speakers made from salad bowls lend a retro feel to movie night.

Patio Table with Built-In Cooler

Replace the middle board of a picnic table with a metal tray. Fill the tray with ice and your drinks will stay cold while you eat.

Pallet Furniture

When you make your own pallet furniture you save money and get unique outdoor chairs and tables. It’s a garden idea worth the time.

Exotic Hammock Swing

Set within a rustic wood frame, this hammock rocks back and forth over a bed of moss. A generous array of toss pillows completes the exotic setting.

DIY Fire Pit

Summer evenings in my household aren’t complete without a fire. A fire pit is a safe and easy way to create light and ambience (and a place to roast marshmallows) in your garden.

Tiki Torch from Recycled Bottle

Here’s another garden idea for fire and light. Empty an interesting glass bottle, add various fittings, and light the wick. Effective, inexpensive, and inspired. (For outdoor use only.)

Build a Fountain

I love the sound of moving water. It excites me and calms me at the same time. I prefer rocks, but you can use a garden ornament or birdbath and turn it into a bubbling fountain.

DIY Outdoor Shower

Your guests will be happy to cool off and clean up with this attractive outdoor shower. All it takes is a weekend and a bit of woodworking skill to apply this garden idea.

Giant Scrabble

Words are easy to find when the board is five foot square and the letters nearly four inches square. The board is made from poured concrete and the letter tiles are cut from baseboard trim.

Lawn Twister Game

We play the twister game on the lawn. Really fun! I spray paint circles of colour on the grass – six circles of four different colours. Don’t worry, the paint goes away after the grass grows and you mow it.

Build a Tree House

When it comes to garden ideas for fun, nothing trumps a tree house. You don’t need great carpentry skills to build a sturdy tree house for your kids.

Stargaze from your Tree House

When you build your tree house in the open, away from trees, you can see the stars. Since it’s not built in a tree, it’s more of a playhouse on stilts. Whatever you call it, it makes for unforgettable summer evenings.

DIY Outdoor Day Bed

With a few boards and minimal carpentry skills you can build an outdoor day bed. Tucked in a shady corner, it’s an ideal space for reading and relaxing on a hot summer day.

Build a Mini Greenhouse

Get a head start on your gardening with a tiny greenhouse made from three big storm windows. When you add in the cost of the scrap timber (nothing) the total cost of this garden idea is zero!

Camping in your Garden

The final garden idea is a twist on classic family fun. Turn your garden into a campground. Set up a tent, make a teepee, or drape sheets over a line. It’s amazingly simple to create the feel of being in the wild right in your safe garden.

Summer is a precious time. Too short, in my book. That’s why I use every garden idea I can think of to make the most of every moment. I hope you will try my favourite garden ideas and share your favourites with your Facebook friends. Don't forget to follow us on Facebook to get more ideas and inspiration for your garden!
