Chelsea Flower Show 2013: Highlights to Expect this Year
Posted by Bridgman on
Every year the Chelsea Flower Show brings the best of gardens and gardening to London, and this year is no exception. To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the 2013 RHS Chelsea Flower Show will look at gardens of the past, present, and future.
Following are a few of the special highlights of this year's centenary show.
Centenary Show Gardens
Fifteen spectacular Show Gardens explore a variety of unique themes, and include:
B&Q Sentebale 'Forget-me-Not' Garden. Evoking the landscape and culture of Lesotho, this show garden was designed in partnership with Sentebale, the charity HRH Prince Harry established to aid vulnerable children in the African country of Lesotho.
Daily Telegraph. Designed by Christopher Bradley-Hole, this contemporary garden with a Japanese style will feature native English trees and shrubs.
Food and Environment Research Agency. Jo Thompson's design focuses on the threat to British plants, contrasting thriving plantings with dead trees.
East Village Garden. Designed by Michael Balston and Marie-Louise Agius for Delancey, this garden represents the theme of sustainable living in the urban environment.
Keeping with the 100th anniversary theme, floral displays feature today's new varieties alongside favourites of a century ago.
Centenary Photo Competition
The 2103 show is inviting the public to enter photographs from the early years of the show to tell the story of how the show has changed over its history. The winner will receive a pair of tickets to the Chelsea Flower Show on 25 May 2013 and a pair of tickets to the preview evening of the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show on 8 July 2013. To enter, post up to five photos on the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Facebook Page with the words "RHC Flower Show centenary competition" in the description.
The photos will become part of an exciting photographic exhibit of the history of the show.
The public will get the opportunity to vote on the Plant of the Century in the Generation Gardens, which will spotlight changes to gardens and gardening over the past century.
Opera Holland Park
The show grounds will host a special concert featuring a number of the most famous opera classics on 24 May 2013. Tickets are on sale now and must be purchased in advance of the event.
Exhibits and Trade Stands
The Great Pavilion will be the site of 150 exhibits from some of the most renowned nurseries and florists, along with up to 250 trade stands.
