Celebrate the start of Wimbledon with heaps of strawberries and cream homeware
Posted by Bridgman on
Us Brits love a bit of Wimbledon. It's one of the key events in our sporting calendar and never fails to get us all jumping up and down wildly in front of the TV, in the hope that this will be Andy Murray's year again. (Come on Andy, you can do it!). Especially after he claimed the Queen's Club Title for the fourth time a couple of days ago.
I'm not ashamed to admit that I've barely picked up a tennis racket since my days at senior school but along with the rest of the British public I'll be cheering on our tennis stars once the Championships kick off on 29th June (yes, it's a week later this year folks, so don't forget to put it in your diary now).
Whatever the weather, and whatever the match results, there's one thing that we can all do really, really well and that's to capture the essence of Wimbledon at home with heaps of sweet, plump strawberries piled high with generous splodges of thick cream. According to the British Summer Fruits website Elsanta is still our most popular strawberry but do look out for Sweet Eve and Eve's Delight which are high in natural sugars with a pleasant, perfumed aroma and longer shelf life to boot. (Don't forget, whichever variety you pick, strawberries are high in Vitamin C and an excellent source of antioxidants).
Of course, how you serve up your strawbs is vitally important too. Wash very briefly (for fear of your berries turning to mush) and invest in a strawberry huller to remove the calyx and stalk with ease (the Chef'n StemGem costs £4.99, www.lakeland.co.uk). Then tumble your berries into a beautiful glass bowl with a hotch-potch of pretty china dishes and spoons to hand (and heaps of fluffy double cream whipped to perfection). Finish off with a pot of piping hot tea and pastel-coloured cupcakes if you want to go the whole hog.
If you're not a fan of real strawberries, you can always brighten up your home with an array of berry prints and patterns. Perk up a tired sofa with a charming, stone coloured linen cushion handprinted with crimson strawberries from www.notonthehighstreet.com and get your five-a-day fruity fix with a mix and match pear version too. Fill your home with the lingering aroma of sweet strawberries throughout the day too (or the entire Wimbledon season), by lighting a few of Yankee Candle's Strawberry Buttercream and Sweet Strawberry candle jars and votives.
British designer Sophie Allport's charming 'Strawberries & Cream' range includes pastel blue and white, fine bone china, mugs, jugs and jam jars decorated with Sophie's illustrations of plump red strawberries. It's the perfect collection to take outdoors and enjoy a post-Wimbledon alfresco cup of tea on one of our luxurious, reclining sun beds.
